Henk Dawson
My creativity and artistic inclinations stem from the human condition and my own experiences that drive me to expressions in art. Born and raised in the brightly colored tropical country of Suriname, color and light became early on the fabric of my art. As a child I played with colorful paint on my black and white photos which brought me an honorable mention in the Caribbean Young Artist Competition.
My persistent fascination with the combination of photography and painting came to fruition when I retired from careers in physics and medicine to become a full time artist. From my childhood joys of painting photos, to using my photography now for digital paintings, my creativity has come full circle.
Digital Painting is a unique and powerful medium making use of the computer as art tool to obtain access to millions of colors and extraordinary artistic choices. I use this new medium in combination with traditional media to create what I see and feel. My paintings exploit simple compositions, often depicting fleeting moments, captured with a digital camera and painted on the computer to let color and luminosity define form. The paintings are then rendered on canvas or on watercolor paper and combined with traditional paint to underscore color variability and texture.
“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up” --Picasso
