Kat Todd
I began painting with acrylics on canvas in 2005 out of a desire to create a relaxing environment in my own home. I feel that the movement on the canvas should be soothing yet still interesting. I have been largely self-taught and in not having been constrained to a teacher’s view, I have experimented and found fun uses in layering, textures and spatial blocking. Prior to 2005 I dabbled in interior design, faux-painting, lay-out design, and furniture restoration. I have an overwhelming need to refinish, touch-up, improvise, and create. It was out of this need to create, that I started painting. This creative energy needs to be released and I have found painting to be the best vehicle.
I was born in Washington and spent some of my formative years in central California. I have always had a drive for perfection and it showed in my art as early as elementary. High school art proved to be much of the same. It has only been in the last few years that I have been able to step back from the drive for perfection and see the beauty in random moments, and contrast, and variety. Not everything in life is symmetrical and even and fair; but this is what makes it beautiful and able to be grasped. I believe there should be a sense of ease in beauty, and this is what I attempt to create.
